MASIPAG,
in celebration of World Food Day held A GM Rice Forum entitled
"Farmers Not Hungry for GM rice" last October 16, 2006
in Balay Kalinaw, U.P. Diliman, Quezon City. The current satus
of GM rice research and its implication to health, environment
and small farmers were discussed by Dr. Chito Medina and Veronica
Promentilla of MASIPAG, Dr. Romy Quijano of Pesticides Action
Network-Philippines, Neth Daño of Third World Network,
Aurora Regalado of MODE, Elpedio Paglumotan, Jr. of MASIPAG Visayas,
Dolores Ayen of MASIPAG Luzon and by the MASIPAG Chair, Mr. Federico
Gil.

| Likewise,
farmers' alternatives in sustainable rice farming were also discussed
by Amelia Guzman of MASIPAG Luzon, Bernie Cerbo of MASIPAG Visayas
and Eunie Geraldo of MASIPAG Mindanao.
The
said forum was attended by 80 participants coming from the representatives
of different farmers' organizations all over the country, NGOs,
and National Food Authority Employees' Association (NFAEA).
In
connection with the said forum, an Advocacy Training was also
held on October 17, 2006 to strengthen the campaign of MASIPAG
regions against GM rice. Mandy Felicia of IBON Foundation shared
his knowledge on effective ways for an advocacy campaign. MASIPAG
Mindanao also shared their experience on the recent advocacy training
they have conducted for their PCB point persons.
As
a result of the discussions from the forum and advocacy training,
MASIPAG Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao came up with an action plan
that would start the campaign against the commercialization of
GM Rice like Golden Rice or Vitamin A and Bacterial Blight resistant
rice or BB rice.
