Rice
Breeding
Participatory
rice breeding forums have been held in each of the three regions.
In
Luzon, using F2 seeds that they have bred during the Participatory
Rice Breeding Training held at the back-up farm last April 2000,
10 farmers from Oriental Mindoro, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya,
Pangasinan and Aurora have undergone an on-the-job training on
selection in their respective communities. There is one documented
farmer-breeder in Luzon and the seeds that he has produced have
been adjudged by farmers in Oriental Mindoro as one of their Locally
Adapted Selections.
In
the Visayas, to determine the extent and status of the farmers
who practiced breeding and to update their knowledge-base, a breeders'
forum was conducted last June. An initial assessment of the breeding
activities undertaken at the field level was made. There are around
7 farmers who are doing rice breeding.
In
Mindanao a rice breeders forum was held. During the forum, the
following observations were made:
Most
of the farmers who conduct breeding are without formal training
on breeding. These farmers learn the techniques from other Masipag
farmers who attended training and who have been doing breeding over
a period of time.
- Most
of those who conduct breeding are now from first to fifth filial
generation.
- There
are usually 2 to 3 crosses.
- There
is a lack of an adequate recording system, guide, equipment,
and financial support.
The
solution for these problems was thoroughly discussed by the Mindanao
farmer-breeders. One of the main solutions seen by the group was
the formation of MASIPAG Mindanao Rice Breeding Committee (MMRBC),
a body that would carry out the groups' objectives and implement
plans and, as well as to help oversee/address problems initially
identified and problems emerging.
